Diwali Safety Alert: Mumbai Surgeon Shares 5 Crucial Tips to Treat Burn Injuries from Firecrackers

Diwali celebrations often bring dazzling lights and festive joy—but also a rise in burn injuries caused by firecrackers. To ensure a safer celebration, Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon, health educator, and NutriByte Wellness co-founder Dr. Manan Vora has shared key first-aid guidelines for managing burn wounds.

In a video posted on October 18, Dr. Vora highlighted the importance of staying alert and acting swiftly in case of a fire-related accident. “Every Diwali, thousands of people suffer burns ranging from mild to severe. Many panic and don’t know how to respond. So, here are some medical guidelines from a doctor,” he explained.

Here are Dr. Vora’s top five safety tips for a burn-free Diwali:

1. Choose cotton over synthetics
Wear cotton or natural fabrics while bursting crackers, as they don’t melt or stick to the skin when exposed to flames.

2. Cool the burn immediately
If a burn occurs, immerse the area in clean, cool (not ice-cold) water for at least 10 minutes to prevent the injury from worsening.

3. Don’t remove stuck fabric
Avoid pulling off burnt or melted fabric stuck to the skin—it can tear the skin and cause deeper tissue damage.

4. Skip home remedies
Do not apply butter, toothpaste, oils, or ice to burn wounds. These can trap heat or increase the risk of infection.

5. Seek medical help without delay
If the burn is large (bigger than your palm), affects the face, joints, or fingers, or shows signs of infection, get professional medical care immediately.

Dr. Vora concluded by reminding everyone that a safe Diwali is a happy Diwali — and that timely first-aid can make all the difference between a minor burn and a lasting injury.
