Driven by Grit, Built with Grace: C.P. Mohanty

Chairman & Managing Director, C.P. Mohanty Group

FEATURE: In a world where fast-paced ambitions often eclipse steady purpose, the story of C.P. Mohanty emerges as a refreshing reminder of what it truly means to build—brick by brick, value by value, and decade after decade. Not merely a builder of bridges, Mohanty is a builder of trust, integrity, and enduring impact. As the Managing Partner of M/s C.P. Mohanty & Associates, his journey through nearly five decades in the infrastructure sector reflects not just professional success, but the spirit of perseverance that continues to define Odisha’s civil engineering legacy.

Beginning his career in 1978 with very modest means, C.P. Mohanty did not inherit a business empire nor rely on family wealth. Instead, he charted his own path—one built on hard-earned credibility, technical skill, and unwavering determination. Starting with supplying construction materials and operating trucks, he eventually stepped into the challenging world of civil construction in 1984—a field where only the persistent endure and the principled rise.

Over time, he shaped his firm into a “Super Class” contractor, executing vital infrastructure projects for the Public Works Department, Rural Works Department, and World Bank initiatives. His specialization in bridge construction has made him a respected name in the field. Rather than diversifying into scattered domains, he chose to master one—and master it completely. From Buguda in Ganjam to Kendrapada, Rairangpur, Balasore, and Berhampur, Mohanty’s imprint is visible in bridges that do more than connect land; they connect lives.

One of the most ambitious among his many undertakings is an 80-crore bridge over the river Luna and a vital rail overbridge at Ramba, symbolizing his focus on projects that enable regional mobility and economic access. But behind every completed project lies an unshakable belief: quality is non-negotiable. “A bridge should last a hundred years. That’s the benchmark. And there is no shortcut to quality,” he asserts. For him, construction isn’t just business—it’s a duty to society.

But the road to such stature hasn’t been without its potholes. The infrastructure industry, he observes, has become increasingly inaccessible to new entrants. “This trade has become brutally competitive. Without crores in hand and strong technical knowledge, it’s difficult even to survive,” he says. Capital requirements have skyrocketed—from Rs. 20 lakhs in working capital to nearly Rs. 2 crores today just to begin executing a project. Add to that GST complications, slow-moving files, delayed payments, and the stress of audit fears among officers, and the picture becomes clear: infrastructure today demands more than grit—it demands strategic resilience.

His legacy now continues through his son, A.P. Mohanty, a B.Tech graduate and a partner in the firm. He handles day-to-day operations, allowing his father to guide with wisdom and administrative oversight. “I’ve always told him—our work should speak louder than we do. Reputation is built not by what you say, but by what you consistently deliver,” says C.P. Mohanty, who spent 26 years with the Odisha Mining Corporation and collaborated with institutions like NTPC, BHEL, and Paradip Phosphates before turning his full attention to his construction firm.

Having travelled abroad, including to the U.S., Mohanty reflects on the price India pays for inefficiency. “People don’t understand the real cost of bad work until it’s too late,” he says. Yet, he remains committed to the ideal that sincere, steady effort—combined with ethical practice—can still carve a path through the system. “Either by divine mercy or by relentless effort, one must keep pushing forward. That principle has guided me all my life.”

C.P. Mohanty’s journey is not merely about erecting bridges—it is about bridging the gap between aspiration and achievement, between hard realities and hopeful futures. His story stands as a monument to what happens when technical brilliance meets moral clarity. In an industry that often praises speed and spectacle, Mohanty proves that strength, silence, and substance still matter—and always will.
