The inventor of SpaceX and Tesla, who has been in the news frequently since purchasing Twitter, dubbed an X later, made headlines once more when he said he would give Wikipedia $1 billion if they changed their name.
“I will give them a billion dollars if they change their name to Dickipedia,” Muk tweeted, adding that he would do so “in the interests of accuracy.” The billionaire then set another condition, after an X user urged Wikipedia to go ahead with the name change. “@Wikipedia, Do it! You can always change it back after you collect,” the user wrote, to which Musk replied, “One year minimum. I mean, I’m a not fool lol.”
Later, Musk posted an image of Wikipedia’s home page, stating that it was “not for sale” and that Jimmy Wales was making a personal plea. He also asked, “Have you ever wondered why the Wikimedia Foundation wants so much money? It’s definitely not required for Wikipedia to function. A copy of the full text fits exactly on your phone! Why then is the money there? Curious minds are curious to know.
Wales, the creator of Wikipedia, had poked fun at Musk five months prior for stifling opponents of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey, just one day prior to the nation’s intense presidential election. Wales criticized Musk for acknowledging Turkey’s efforts to impose content restrictions while failing to defend free expression. Musk inquired about the possibility of adding a cow and a feces emoji to his Wikipedia page in a subsequent post. In less than a day, Musk’s Wikipedia post has received 12.8 million views and 1.3 lakh likes.
