From Scalpel to Leadership: The Inspiring Journey of Dr. Manash Ranjan Sahoo

FEATURE: A distinguished surgeon, a trailblazing innovator, and a transformative leader—Dr. Manash Ranjan Sahoo has continually redefined excellence in healthcare and medical education. From pioneering laparoscopic surgery in Odisha to spearheading key reforms in medical academia, his unwavering dedication has profoundly impacted the healthcare landscape, leaving an enduring legacy that extends far beyond state borders.

“God can’t be everywhere, that’s why he created mothers,” Dr. Sahoo often says, a reflection of the deep inspiration he drew from his mother, a gynaecologist who shaped his path into medicine. This early influence not only fuelled his passion for surgery but also ingrained in him the values of compassion and service. As the Vice-Chancellor of Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS), Dr. Sahoo continues to revolutionize medical education, ensuring accessibility, innovation, and excellence in the field. His legacy is one of perseverance, passion, and a relentless commitment to improving lives through both surgical mastery and strategic leadership.

Born on December 15, 1967, Dr. Sahoo’s fascination with medicine was deeply rooted in his childhood. Inspired by his mother, a practicing gynaecologist, he observed firsthand the dedication and compassion with which she served her patients. “My mother was my hero growing up,” he recalls. “God can’t be everywhere, that’s why he created mothers.” This maternal influence, coupled with his natural curiosity, set him on the path to becoming a doctor.

His academic brilliance was evident early on. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious University Gold Medal as the Best Surgical Graduate from SCB Medical College, Cuttack. Four years later, he completed his post-graduation in surgery from the same institution, once again securing the University Gold Medal. These early achievements laid the foundation for a career defined by innovation and impact.

Dr. Sahoo began his professional journey in 1997 as a lecturer in surgery at SCB Medical College, Cuttack. In 1998, his expertise in laparoscopic surgery earned him a fellowship in surgical gastroenterology at Sri Ramachandra Bhanja Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai.

Determined to bring advanced surgical techniques to his home state, he returned to Odisha in 1999 and introduced advanced laparoscopic surgery at SCB Medical College. At the time, minimal access surgery (MAS) was largely restricted to private hospitals, often out of reach for economically disadvantaged patients. Dr. Sahoo aimed to bridge this gap. “People often think high-tech surgery only happens in private, expensive hospitals, which they can’t afford,” he explains. “But I wanted to change that perception. Government hospitals should also serve the needy, and that’s why we became doctors.”
Dr. Sahoo’s appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of Odisha University of Health Sciences marked a defining moment in his career. His leadership has been instrumental in reshaping Odisha’s medical education system and healthcare landscape.

One of his primary initiatives at OUHS was ensuring the registration of all medical colleges under university guidelines, creating a standardized system for education and examinations. He also introduced faculty development programs, online learning platforms, and workshops to foster a culture of innovation and excellence in medical education. “From my days as a student to now guiding young doctors, I understand the gaps that exist in the system,” he reflects. “My first priority was to address those gaps and ensure that the system functions as it should.”

His leadership has also been marked by the introduction of the Staff Emeritus Program, enabling experienced faculty members to continue mentoring young doctors and students even after retirement. These efforts have not only strengthened the medical education system but also enhanced the overall quality of healthcare in Odisha.
Despite his transition into leadership, Dr. Sahoo remains deeply connected to his roots as a surgeon. His philosophy is simple yet profound: “Every doctor should be patient-centric, and every teacher should be student-centric.”

He acknowledges that leadership comes with its own set of challenges but believes it is no more difficult than the precision required in surgery. “Is it harder than standing in an operating room for 10 hours performing a laparoscopic surgery on a pancreatic cancer patient? No, definitely not,” he asserts. His ability to adapt, embrace challenges, and drive meaningful change is a testament to his exceptional leadership.

Dr. Sahoo’s contributions to healthcare extend beyond medical education. In 2021, he performed the first Total Laparoscopic Spleen Preserving Distal Pancreatectomy in the eastern zone of India at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, a landmark achievement in the field of laparoscopic surgery.

His efforts in advancing clinical care have been widely recognized, earning him prestigious orations such as the Prof. G. S. Dasmahapatra Oration in 2014 and the Oration on “Advances in Clinical Care 2020” in 2020. His expertise has positioned him as a thought leader in surgical advancements, influencing the next generation of surgeons and healthcare professionals.

Dr. Manash Ranjan Sahoo’s journey is one of resilience, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His contributions to healthcare have touched countless lives, and his vision continues to shape the future of medical education and healthcare accessibility in Odisha.

One of the most touching moments in his career was when a rickshaw puller, anxious about an expensive and complex surgery, approached him for treatment. Thanks to laparoscopic surgery, the patient was able to return home within two days. “His happiness, that’s what matters most,” Dr. Sahoo reflects. These moments of impact fuel his commitment to making high-quality healthcare accessible to all, regardless of their economic background.

Looking ahead, Dr. Sahoo envisions a healthcare system that prioritizes innovation, accessibility, and excellence. His leadership at OUHS is setting new benchmarks for medical education and healthcare delivery in Odisha.
In his own words, “I believe decision-making is in my blood. As a surgeon, when I see a patient bleeding to death, there’s no room for hesitation. I act, and I save lives—that’s all that matters.”

Dr. Sahoo’s story is more than an inspiring narrative—it is a blueprint for transformative leadership in healthcare. His unwavering dedication and pioneering spirit continue to inspire countless individuals, shaping the future of healthcare for generations to come.
