Government orders every Indian to leave Nigeria with immediate effect

On August 11, 2023, the Indian government issued a warning, urging its citizens living in Niger to leave the country as soon as possible.Following the coup in Niger, the Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advise requesting Indian people whose presence is not necessary to leave the country.
President Bazoum was deposed, the presidential guard stated on national television on July 26. General Abdourahamane Tchiani, who oversaw the presidential guard, assumed command of the new military junta in Niger a few days later.

Regional powers have voiced their vehement opposition to the coup. A coalition of West African countries known as ECOWAS has urged the junta’s leaders to reinstate democratic rule and even threatened to use force if necessary.Although Mali and Burkina Faso pledged to support the military junta in Niger in a conflict, the deadline passed without any action from other military-led regimes in the area. Domestic turmoil, which has seen a number of groups mobilise against the coup leaders in Niger, has made the already challenging position even more difficult.

Security experts caution that the chaos in Niger may allow militants affiliated with al Qaeda and the Islamic State to further establish their control in the Sahel region of West Africa, where they have already claimed hundreds of lives and driven millions of people from their homes. In one of the poorest regions of the globe, it might also impede democratic growth and economic development.The Indian government keeps a careful eye on what’s happening in Niger. Indian nationals who are not necessary in the country are recommended to depart as soon as feasible in light of the current circumstances. They might remember that the airspace is currently shut down.

The greatest care should be taken to ensure safety and security when crossing a land border. The MEA recommended anyone who might be considering travelling to Niger in the near future to postpone their plans until things return to normal.
