Growth with Eye on Environment: Captain Dibya Shankar Mishra

The incumbent Minister for industries, MSMEs, and energy, Captain Dibya Shankar Mishra anchors the new dawn of an industrial era in Odisha. His vision, dynamism, and appetite for outcome-driven growth are starting to pay rich dividends for the state.

Addressing the sixth edition of Em-Power- Energy Scenario of Odisha: Growth, Challenges, Opportunities and Road Ahead, organized by FICCI Odisha State Council, Capt. Mishra said that the Odisha Energy Department has evolved to be a sound energy system in the country. “Odisha is one of the prime leading states in privatizing Discoms.

We are self-sufficient in terms of energy production as well. Transmission networks across the state are being strengthened. We are slowly overcoming the crisis brought on by the pandemic last year. The Discoms are at full distribution capacity. This is the time to consolidate and work harder,” he said.

Captain Mishra further stated that energy will be a focus sector for the state, and renewable and new energy development will come in a big way. We should think globally and about the environment. With all our efforts, the energy sector in Odisha will improve, he said.

The Minister also urged the industry to look at ways to improve the power scenario in the state through MSMEs. “I request the people concerned with power distribution and transmission to utilize the local MSMEs in Odisha and provide them with technical standards. There is a lot of scope with the MSMEs concerning energy production,” he said.

It is the Minister’s vision to ensure quality and uninterrupted last-mile power supply to every citizen. He is also focused on balancing industrial growth with reducing footprint for environmental sustainability. “We will have to protect nature and work towards a zero-discharge industry. We need to take care of our workforce and workplaces for healthy, holistic growth of our industries,” he says.

The six focus industries in the state- tourism, food processing, chemicals, plastics, petrochemicals; electronics manufacturing; ancillary and downstream industries in the metal sector; and textiles and apparel- have been performing well in terms of production and investments. “However, if the state aims for further development and investments, we need to focus on IT and electronics. There is a vast scope of development in this sector. The state government will facilitate all necessary actions towards this effect,” he noted.

Mishra has been urging investors to benefit from business reforms and state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities in Odisha and set up manufacturing units in the state. He has won the enormous trust of his leader, who has saddled him with the two most crucial ministries- that of industries and energy, at a time when Odisha is at the crossroads of reforms and development. He is the lone Minister from the state’s abysmally backward Kalahandi zone, storming into national news for gnawing poverty and chronic starvation.
