Feature: In the heart of western Odisha lies Bandhapali, a small village in Bargarh district known for its timeless Sambalpuri handlooms. It was here that Roshan Kumar Goyal was born, into a modest Marwari business family that lived by values, community spirit, and entrepreneurial grit. Over the years, Roshan has emerged not just as a businessman but as a leader deeply rooted in tradition while steering his ventures with a modern, sustainable outlook. Today, as the Managing Director of Mittal Rice Mills Pvt. Ltd., he represents a new wave of entrepreneurs shaping Odisha’s industrial landscape with responsibility and vision.
Born in the village of Bandhapali in Bargarh district, Mr. Goyal grew up in a modest Marwari business family that instilled in him the virtues of discipline, resilience, and simplicity. His early schooling in the village high school, followed by intermediate and graduation at GM College in Sambalpur, set the foundation of a determined learner. A move to Delhi for his MBA in 2002 opened doors to the corporate world, where, at the young age of 22, he embarked on a career spanning sectors as diverse as pharma, finance, telecom, media, and NGOs. Yet, even as he explored new horizons, he remained firmly connected to his roots. Today, alongside his professional commitments, he continues to invest in knowledge, pursuing a Ph.D. at IIM Sambalpur.
For Mr. Goyal, family has always been the compass guiding his decisions. Every choice, he believes, must pass a simple test: does it bring happiness to the maximum number of people? If yes, it is worth pursuing; if not, it is best left behind. This ethos would later define not only his leadership but also the culture of Mittal Rice Mills.
Rice milling was not a new terrain for Mr. Goyal—it was an inheritance. His father and uncles had painstakingly established a rice mill in the 1970s, laying a foundation that taught him the nuances of the trade from childhood. In 2009, after seven years of corporate exposure, he returned to Sambalpur to take charge of Mittal Rice Mills Pvt. Ltd., founded in 1973. At the time, the mill was one of the largest in Odisha, carrying a strong legacy but battling financial distress.
Taking over as Managing Director was no easy step. The company was loss-making, weighed down by debt, and facing stiff competition. Within two years, however, Mr. Goyal and his team managed a remarkable turnaround—making the mill profitable and repaying all loans within three years. The journey was not without setbacks, including a challenging partnership that left him with valuable lessons in what not to do as an entrepreneur. But out of adversity came resilience, clarity, and the vision to lead Mittal Rice Mills into a new era.
Sixteen years on, Mr. Goyal’s proudest achievement is not just the mill’s growth, but the loyalty of the people who make it possible. Many employees who joined in 2009 still stand by his side, a testament to his people-first approach. For him, success lies in the happiness and stability of those who work with him.
Under his leadership, Mittal Rice Mills has been transformed into a modern, technology-driven enterprise. Advanced sortex technology, slow elevators designed to minimize grain breakage, and eco-friendly boilers and gensets have redefined efficiency. More importantly, sustainability has been woven into the DNA of the company—through captive solar plants, wastewater recycling, zero discharge practices, and the utilization of rice husk ash for industrial use. The lush six lakh square feet of plantations in Bargarh stand as living proof of this green commitment.
Mr. Goyal’s leadership extends beyond the gates of his mill. He has consistently raised his voice for the larger rice milling community in Odisha. Despite being one of India’s largest paddy producers, Odisha’s restrictive policies have kept millers from accessing export markets—a disadvantage compared to neighboring states. He has taken these issues to the highest levels, even representing Odisha before Union Food Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal. In August 2025, he also visited Moscow as part of a FICCI delegation alongside India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, strengthening his role as an industry voice at the international stage. Today, he continues to advocate for energy duty exemptions on solar power for rice mills and policy reforms that can sustain more than 1,500 mills in the state—critical not only for employment but for farmers’ livelihoods.
His entrepreneurial journey has always carried a social dimension. In 2008, Imperial College in Bargarh was established by his brother, with Mr. Goyal later joining him in taking the vision forward. Similarly, NuSteps Innovation Foundation was set up by his brother, but today both brothers together are steering it ahead with renewed purpose. The college has since emerged as a respected academic hub, even winning the “District Green Champion Award” from the Government of India. His other ventures, such as RSBP Innovations Pvt. Ltd., reflect his belief in innovation-led progress and community empowerment.
Beyond business and community, Roshan credits much of his journey to the unwavering support of his family. His wife, Mrs. Khushbu Goyal, has stood beside him through every challenge, offering strength and encouragement at each step. Their children, son Aaditya Goyal and daughter Aditi Goyal, are his constant source of inspiration, reminding him each day of the legacy of values and responsibility he wishes to pass on.
At the core of Mr. Goyal’s worldview is a philosophy drawn from the Bhagavad Gita: “Kya leke aaye the, kya leke jaoge.” Life, he believes, is not about amassing wealth, but about creating value—for one’s family, one’s community, and one’s nation. To him, true success is measured in the ability to work honestly, leave behind a positive footprint, and rest each night with a clear conscience.
Looking ahead, Mr. Goyal sees Odisha as a fertile ground for entrepreneurship. With a pro-business environment and emerging cities like Rourkela offering new opportunities, he urges young entrepreneurs to seize the moment. His message is direct: embrace competition—it sharpens you; hold firm to your values—they give you strength; and strive each day to be better than yesterday. With consistency, innovation, and integrity, he believes, the sky is the limit.
