In Conversation with Author Jennifer Richardson

Jennifer Richardson began writing in midlife and authored her second book in early 2023. She has developed a men’s health platform in India and continues writing in various forms.

1.Hello Jennifer, how you define yourself to our readers? Which profession are you working in?

I describe myself as a writer and promoter. I started writing in the last few years and have written two books and hundreds and thousands of words for my websites. The term ‘promoter’ comes from my Applied Science degree in Public Health and Health Promotion. Health and wellbeing is a passion of mine. I started a men’s health and lifestyle platform in India called menPsyche. I use both my writing and promotion skills to develop the business.

2.Please share your journey of being a writer? When did you start and choose writing? What’s your inspiration behind it?

I started writing after someone told me I would be good at it!I had not written before, and so I began with small articles. This led to a few small jobs of content work and ghostwriting.I then began to develop my own personal blog called ‘Luxury in India.’

In the meantime, I wrote my first book in two months. I self-published the novel under a pen name. This was a huge undertaking however, I found I could write easily. The process I used was to create chapter headings and structure the story from there.

My second book, ‘Personal Disaster – The UnStickler’s Guide to Handling a Life Crisis (Volume 1)’ was completed in early 2023.

I wrote this book for people who are truly stuck with a life dilemma. I provide my personal experiences in the book and offer readers practical ways to help themselves if there is no one else to help.

3.How has writing helped you and how has life changed after being a writer? What suggestion do you have for aspiring writers? What is your strength?

Writing showed me that I am not a skilled writer in the literature sense, but I am a good communicator and storyteller.Writing helps you express yourself. It is perfect for me as I do not speak Hindi but live in Northern India, so I can often only express myself in writing. My advice to writers is to write for yourself. This helped me. I thought of my audience, but I essentially started writing to give myself a voice.

4.What is best part about being a writer? What was the most challenging task in your writing career? How do you bring out new ideas for your writing?

The best part about being a writer is the freedom to give any idea life. You can say or be anything (almost)! The most challenging part of writing is editing and reading my writing repeatedly.Ideas for writing often come from conversations and discussions.

I find some ideas from the media and television, but the majority of my ideas spring up from conceptual and philosophical discussions. (Occasionally from business discussions too).

5.What do you do apart from writing? How do you manage time for writing and are you writing something as of now?

Apart from writing, I am working on my new business promotion platform. I enjoy travel, although I have not had a chance to do much of that lately.I have three book ideas I’m working on right now. I am always writing outlines for new ideas.I am currently writing Volume two of the Personal Disaster series, which will address personal Financial Crisis.
