Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed back against former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that India and China are “primary funders” of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Zelensky asserted that India stands “mostly” with Ukraine, while acknowledging challenges related to energy ties with Russia.
“I think India, mostly, with us. Yes, we have these questions with energy, but I think President Trump can manage it,” Zelensky said. He expressed confidence that India would eventually alter its approach to Russian energy, citing growing relations with Europe. “I think we have to do everything not to withdraw India and they will change their attitude to the Russian energy sector, I am sure,” he added.
The Ukrainian leader also drew a distinction between India and China, noting that Beijing’s stance remains more complicated. “With China it’s more difficult, because today it’s not in their interests not to support Russia,” he said.
Zelensky went on to say that Trump could influence Chinese President Xi Jinping’s approach to the conflict. “I think that President Trump can change the attitude of Xi Jinping to this war, because China, we don’t feel that China wants to finish this war,” he told Fox News’ Special Report.
His comments came in response to a reporter’s question pointing to India as one of the contributors to the war—an assertion Zelensky firmly dismissed.
