India has taken a significant leap in indigenous defence technology with the successful development of the country’s first privately built supersonic ramjet engine. Bengaluru-based startup Hyprix Aviation, founded by young innovators Devmalya Biswas (23) and Divyanshu Mandowara (22), has achieved a major breakthrough with the testing of its liquid-fueled supersonic ramjet engine, Tezz.
This technological milestone, successfully tested in January 2025 at the National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) at IIT Madras, marks a crucial step in India’s mission towards defence self-reliance. With the capability to operate at speeds between Mach 2 and Mach 4, Tezz is set to play a vital role in next-generation missile systems and high-speed aerial platforms.
The emergence of Hyprix Aviation highlights the growing momentum of India’s private defence manufacturing sector. Traditionally dominated by state-run agencies and international defence corporations, advanced propulsion technology development is now witnessing significant contributions from homegrown startups.
Ramjet engines, which sustain supersonic speeds by compressing incoming air for combustion without requiring mechanical compressors, are critical for modern missile and high-speed aerospace systems. The success of Tezz signals the increasing expertise of India’s private sector in high-end defence technology, reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.
Building on its success, Hyprix Aviation is now working on advanced ramjet-powered artillery shells designed for extended-range strikes. These innovations aim to enhance India’s strategic capabilities, aligning with the country’s vision of achieving greater self-sufficiency in defence production.
The development of Tezz not only showcases the capabilities of India’s private sector but also strengthens the nation’s position in cutting-edge aerospace and missile technology. With continued investment and innovation, private companies like Hyprix Aviation are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s defence landscape.
