By putting into operation a state-of-the-art 1.2 million tonne per year (MTPA) rail and heavy structure mill at its Angul Steel complex in Odisha, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) intends to quadruple its rail manufacturing capacity.
“A new 1.2 MTPA rail mill will be built by JSPL in Angul. The overall rail-making capacity would more than quadruple to 2.2 MTPA with the completion of the new mill, according to a corporate statement released on Thursday. According to sources, the investment might be somewhere between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 3,000 crore.
The steel producer owns and runs a 1 MTPA rail mill at its Raigarh facility in Chhattisgarh, where it produces specialty rails for the railways, metro projects, and high-speed freight routes, including 1175 HT, R350 HT, asymmetric rails, and 1080 HH (head hardened) rails.
“Our company is proactively augmenting rail manufacturing capacity to support the ongoing expansion and modernisation of the Indian rail network. We are committed to support the government’s initiatives like Gati Shakti Yojna, AtmaNirbhar Bharat by making available domestically produced products at competitive prices against imported items,” JSPL Managing Director Bimlendra Jha said in a statement.
Additionally, JSP exports its “Made in India” rails to a number of international locations. It claimed that by providing specialized rail blooms to the European railways, it had established itself as a top-tier rail maker.
