Military’s indigenisation push spans basic items, big systems

The LCA, various kinds of helicopters, warships, tanks, artillery guns, warships, missiles, and rockets are just a few of the weapons and systems that India manufactures.People with knowledge of the situation said on Friday that India’s massive defence indigenization drive has highlighted how the nation previously imported even basic items like aircraft paint, cargo nets and slings for helicopters, anti-collision lights for fighter jets, landing lights for trainer aircraft, and LED lights for warships, which now figure on a list of hundreds of military components that are being made in India.

These are only minor steps on the arduous path towards indigenization that the defence ministry is pursuing through a tiered strategy that emphasises both large defence platforms and their smaller elements and components. One of the aforementioned officials, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that it was impossible to manufacture fighter jets while importing aircraft grade paint, manufacture helicopters while relying on foreign suppliers for cargo nets, or construct warships without using LED lighting for flight deck purposes.
