BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi once again proved why he is regarded as the “People’s CM” on Wednesday when he chose to fly economy class on a regular commercial flight from Bhubaneswar to Chandigarh. In a move that highlighted both his humility and commitment to responsible governance, Majhi opted out of using the private jets typically reserved for top politicians, sending a clear message about curbing unnecessary public expenditure.
Accompanied by his wife Priyanka Marandi, Majhi’s decision stood out, particularly since the government had already arranged two private jets for his official three-day tour of Haryana and Maharashtra. The more luxurious option, a Legasi 650 charter plane, would have cost Rs 91.22 lakh, while the Falcon 200 jet was priced at Rs 78.55 lakh. However, Majhi refused to justify these high costs, choosing instead to travel like an everyday citizen.
His visit to Chandigarh included attending the swearing-in ceremony of his political ally Nayab Singh Saini and participating in a meeting with other NDA-ruled state chief ministers. From Chandigarh, he would continue to Mumbai for more official engagements.
This isn’t the first time Majhi has led by example, and his choice to fly modestly reinforces his reputation as a leader who practices what he preaches. It also sets him apart from previous BJD leaders, such as V Karthikeyan Pandian, who were known for their frequent use of state-funded helicopter trips.
Majhi’s gesture has resonated strongly with the public, further solidifying his image as a leader who truly cares about the people. His decision to reject unnecessary luxuries in favor of more modest choices shows why he continues to be seen as a true “People’s CM”—someone who not only talks about serving the people but lives by that principle in every decision he makes.
