The Central Government has authorized an additional ₹255.24 crore for Odisha under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) as a major relief gesture to help the state recover from the floods and cyclonic storms that affected the area in 2024. The High-Level Committee (HLC), led by Union Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, made the decision. This funding is a component of a broader package of ₹1,554.99 crore that has been distributed to five states that have experienced natural calamities. In addition to Odisha, funding has been provided to Andhra Pradesh (₹608.08 crore), Nagaland (₹170.99 crore), Telangana (₹231.75 crore), and Tripura (₹288.93 crore).
The authorized assistance is on top of the funds already provided to Odisha by the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). In the fiscal year 2024–2025, the Central Government distributed ₹18,322.80 crore to 27 states through the SDRF and ₹4,808.30 crore from the NDRF to 18 states, demonstrating its proactive approach to disaster management. In order to increase resilience against future disasters, Odisha has also profited from other mitigation funds, such as the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) and the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF).
Without waiting for a formal communication from the state government, the Center immediately dispatched Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to evaluate the damage in Odisha in reaction to the natural calamities. This demonstrates the Union Government’s dedication to provide disaster-affected areas prompt aid and assistance with rehabilitation. The Odisha government is anticipated to strengthen the state’s readiness and resilience for disasters by accelerating rehabilitation activities, restoring infrastructure, and offering crucial aid to impacted people with the help of this increased funds.
