BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has announced the formation of a dedicated task force to investigate and prosecute cases related to child pornography. This decision follows the recent Supreme Court ruling, which held that the mere possession of child pornography constitutes an offence under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Information Technology Act, even if the material is not further disseminated.
In a statement released on Monday, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding strict legal frameworks aimed at eradicating all forms of child sexual exploitation. “The state will enhance coordination with law enforcement agencies to effectively combat the dissemination and consumption of child pornography,” the statement read. This includes the establishment of dedicated task forces to focus on investigating and prosecuting offenders involved in such crimes.
The government emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, “The landmark decision sends a powerful message that the state will not tolerate any form of child sexual exploitation. It reinforces the responsibility of each citizen to protect our children, ensuring their safety and well-being.”
In line with the Supreme Court’s recommendations, Odisha will also invest in comprehensive support services for victims of child abuse. The government aims to provide these survivors with the necessary care and resources to facilitate their recovery and reintegration into society.
Additionally, the state government has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to child exploitation. The Supreme Court’s ruling has been hailed as a significant step in curbing the menace of child pornography in the country.
