The Mohan Majhi government has decided to address the potato shortage in the state by bringing in potatoes by rail from Uttar Pradesh. According to Krushna Chandra Patra, the minister of consumer welfare and food supplies for Odisha, “Efforts are underway to bring potato consignments in two trains, and the matter is being discussed with the Railway Minister.”
Midway through July, West Bengal’s supply disruption to keep local prices under control resulted in a decrease in supplies and an increase in prices across the border. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been urged to open up supplies by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and previous Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, but their requests have so far been ignored.
The state administration has now chosen to import potatoes from Uttar Pradesh as a substitute supply in an effort to lessen its reliance on West Bengal. However, state traders had declined to buy it from Uttar Pradesh, claiming that customers preferred the variety found in the northern state.
