The 93rd Academy Awards or Oscars 2021 ceremony took place at the traditional venue of Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles plus the Union Station. This year was been the most diverse list of nominees in the history of the Academy award to some of the iconic winners.
The Academy Award 2021 was organised without any host for the third consecutive year. As per the official report, Nomadlandwon the Best Picture and Director Chloe Zhao became the second women in 93 years ever to win an Oscar for Best Director for the same movie. Anthony Hopkins won the Best Actor Award for his performance in The Father beating late actor Chadwick Boseman in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Frances McDormand bagged her third Best Actress Award whereas Yuh-Jung Youn becoming the first Korean performer to win an Academy Award in the acting category for her performance in Minari.
But the most special moment during this year Oscars was when Irrfan Khan and Bhanu Athaiya were honoured in the “In Memoriam”. Both the late celebrities were the Indian film personalities honoured in the “In Memoriam” montage. Sean Connery and Chadwick Boseman were also among many others that the Academy remembered in the special tribute segment.
Even Oscar nominee Angela Bassett gave a speech with the tribute, which was shown in the form of a video clip and was a homage to achievers the world of screen lost over the past year, including actors, writers, directors, and technicians.
Actor Irrfan Khan who passed away last year in Mumbai at the age of 53 after a two-year battle with neuroendocrine tumour, earned global recognition with his work in projects such as “The Warrior”, “The Namesake”, “Slumdog Millionaire”, “The Amazing Spider-Man”, “Life Of Pi”, “Jurassic World” and “Inferno”.
Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya who passed away at her residence in Mumbai after prolonged illness last year was the first Indian to win an Oscar for her work in Sir Richard Attenborough’s much-feted classic of 1982, “Gandhi”. In 2012, Athaiya returned her Oscar to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for safekeeping.
