Two proposals that would have given authorities wider authority to punish people for activities against the state and military have not been signed into law by Pakistani President Arif Alvi.
According to Reuters, both chambers of Pakistan’s Parliament have already approved the laws.
President Alvi is a supporter of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a coalition government that opposed the two legislation and is led by former prime minister Imran Khan.
“As God is my witness, I did not sign Official Secrets Amendment Bill 2023 & Pakistan Army Amendment Bill 2023 as I disagreed with these laws,” Alvi stated on the social networking site X.
He said that in order to render the bills ineffectual, he had instructed his staff to return them to the legislature unsigned within the allotted time.
He said, “However, I have discovered today that my staff undermined my will and command,” and expressed the hope that because Allah is all-knowing, He would pardon IA. However, I beg for pardon from those who may be impacted.
The President’s decision, according to the Ministry of Law and Justice, is seriously troubling and unlawful.
The ministry stated in a statement that the president had two options: “The President has two options: either give assent, or refer the matter to the Parliament with specific observations.” The ministry added that the president had not exercised either option.
“Such a course of action is against the letter and spirit of the constitution,” the ministry declared.
