PIL filed in Supreme Court seeking probe by expert panel for Odisha train accident

An expert panel chaired by a former judge of the Supreme Court of India has been requested in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed before the court to investigate the Odisha railway catastrophe. The PIL also requested guidelines and instructions for the urgent adoption of the KAVACH Protection System, an ATP system for Automatic Train Protection, by Indian Railways.

“Immediately to set up an expert commission headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court consisting of technical members to analyze and review the current risk and safety parameters in the railway system and to suggest systematic safety modifications for strengthening Railway safety mechanism and submit its report in two months to this court,” the PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari said

It is important to know that the horrific Coromandel train disaster on Friday night resulted in the deaths of 275 persons. There were 1,175 passengers hurt. According to the report, 1175 wounded people in total were admitted to various public and private hospitals. 793 of the patients have received treatment and been released. 382 passengers are currently receiving medical attention at a number of public and private institutions. Two of them are reportedly in critical condition.
