Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed shock over the sudden death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away at the age of 52 in a scuba diving incident in Singapore.
“Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg. He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi wrote on X.
Born in 1972 in Meghalaya, Zubeen Garg—originally named Zubeen Borthakur—adopted his stage surname “Garg” in the 1990s, inspired by his gotra. He rose to nationwide fame with the chartbuster Ya Ali from the 2006 film Gangster, followed by several other Bollywood hits including Subah Subah and Kya Raaz Hai.
Although best known for his Hindi and Bollywood numbers, Garg was a versatile singer who primarily worked in Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi music industries, while performing in more than 40 languages and dialects. Over the years, he became one of Assam’s highest-paid and most celebrated musical icons.
