Even though he was very sick, Pope Francis made an appearance on Easter Sunday to greet the faithful who had gathered in St. Peter’s Square for Easter and the Urbi et Orbi blessing, which means “to the city and to the world” and is only given on the most solemn occasions in the Catholic Church. Just hours before he died, the Pope, who was devoted to the sacred Roman church, met with US Vice President Vance. When Cardinal Ratzinger, who was then Pope Benedict XVI, resigned in February 2013, the first pope to voluntarily step down since 1294, he was declared Pope following the conclave.
There was a great deal of internal conflict in the church he inherited. Pope Francis, a humble man of God, tried his best to change it by eschewing the grandeur that the papacy was known for and committing himself to helping the underprivileged, disenfranchised, and oppressed. He has frequently attempted to be the voice of reason and peace during times of conflict, leaving the world and the faithful in his wake. He has called for a truce and peace in the Middle East and appointed a special envoy for the dispute between Russia and Ukraine.
On Easter Sunday, one of his last public appearances, he read a message on his behalf that read, “I appeal to all those in positions of political responsibility in our world not to yield to the logic of fear which only leads to isolation from others, but instead to use the resources available to help the needy, to fight hunger, and to encourage initiatives that promote development.”
