Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister of Punjab, is in Germany for a week where he met with business leaders to encourage investment in his state. After his Tuesday visit to the BMW corporate headquarters, a formal announcement was made announcing that BMW had decided to build a manufacturing facility in Punjab. According to a government press release, “the efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to lure significant investments from Germany bore fruit on Tuesday as leading auto giant BMW agreed to set up its auto part manufacturing unit in the state.”
BMW refuted this on Wednesday, claiming that, in addition to its well-established dealer network spread across the country’s major cities, “it is firmly committed to its Indian operations with its manufacturing plant in Chennai, a parts warehouse in Pune, and a training centre in Gurgaon.” But according to the statement, “it has no plans to establish additional manufacturing operations in Punjab.”AAP offered a weak defence and weak justification for the situation; spokesperson Malwinder Singh of the AAP claimed that Mr. Mann had met with BMW officials at their headquarters in Germany and that they had accepted his offer of a plant setup. But processes take time to complete. For a meeting, BMW has agreed to travel to Punjab in February 2023.
MoUs from the previous administration were discarded, the spokesperson claimed. The spokesperson stated, “Previous chief minister would travel abroad and purchase dry fruit trees, but for the first time Bhagwant Mann has gone and brought big investment.” Bhagwant Mann was criticised by opposition leaders for making false claims.
The Bhagwant Mann administration frequently makes exaggerated claims, and this development was no exception. According to BJP leader Tarun Chugh, Mann has travelled privately to Germany rather than looking for new investments in Punjab. Daljit Singh Cheema, the leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, requested that the chief minister record every detail.
