The Odisha Government approved to make a provision for the quota/ reservation in Medical and Engineering colleges for students passing out from government-run school in Odisha. Along with that, the state government also approved a proposal for making it mandatory for all people’s representatives and government servants to submit property statements every year.
Students who are completing their education in the government-run schools will now have a reservation during the admission process into medical and engineering courses. Under the chairmanship of retired Orissa High Court judge, a committee will be conducted to fix the three-month modalities. After which the effective implementation will be done of the recommendation from the next academic year.
A K Arukha, State Parliamentary Affairs Minister stated that the complete details would be available in the public domain for the transparency. During the video conference by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the proposal was approved by the cabinet.
Sameer Das, State School and Mass Education Minister stated that the reservation’s main motive is to motivate the students from rural areas who are unable to take coaching classes or online courses. The students of state-run schools in rural areas who are preparing for JEE Main are unable to get the necessary facilities like coaching courses etc. which the urban students are getting very easily. The committee will give a final shape to the decision and also will submit the details following which will be implemented from the next academic year.
Students who are passing the matriculation examinations from the government schools will be eligible to avail the reservation. Even their economic background won’t be taken into consideration for the quota.
The proposal will also include the life history of eminent personalities of Odisha in the school syllabus from Std VII to Std IX.
