Schools closed because of Nipah Virus

Wednesday saw the confirmation of yet another Nipah virus (Bangladesh variant) case, bringing the state’s total number of infections to five. The contact list of the patients has been a source of concern as the state government has imposed containment zones and limits to stop the spread of the virus, as 700 people have come into touch with the patients. According to George, 77 of these 700 fall into the high-risk category.

The government of Kerala has also stepped up its attempts to save a nine-year-old kid who is battling the fatal virus by requesting the sole anti-viral medication available. The Kerala government further ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Kozhikode and other containment zones on Wednesday as part of its efforts to stop the spread of the deadly Nipah virus.

The Kerala administration had earlier stated that the virus strain found in the state was the Bangladesh form, which travels from person to person and has a high fatality rate while being less contagious.A zoonotic virus called Nipah can infect people when it comes into contact with diseased animals or tainted food. Once someone is afflicted, it can spread to another person. Fever, headache, coughing, breathing difficulties, and vomiting are among of the symptoms, and in severe situations, they can cause brain death due to swelling of the brain.
