Shashi Tharoor, a senior Congress MP, said Monday that Delhi’s terrible air quality made it “essentially uninhabitable” from November to January and questioned if the city should even continue to serve as the country’s capital.Delhi is officially the most polluted city in the world after Dhaka, according to Shashi Tharoor’s post on X, which cited Air Quality Index (AQI) data from Swiss air quality technology company IQAir. Tharoor further accused the administration of “doing nothing.”Delhi has four times the hazardous levels and is almost five times more filthy than Dhaka, the second most polluted city in the world. “Our government has been observing this nightmare for years and doing nothing about it, which is unconscionable,” Tharoor wrote on X.
Health and safety issues are raised by the “alarmingly high” levels of air quality that persist in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
As a thick layer of haze engulfed the area for the seventh day in a row, the majority of air quality monitoring stations reported the city’s AQI above the 500-mark (severe plus) on Tuesday morning. On Monday, Sunday, and Saturday, the city’s AQI was 494, 441, and 417, respectively.
