After being found guilty of raping a German tourist in Alwar, Rajasthan, in 2006, Bitihotra Mahanti passed away in late treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. He passed away at around midnight from stomach cancer, according to accounts. He had been receiving supportive therapy when he complained of bleeding approximately 1.5 months ago. According to the authorities, he was in Bhubaneswar on parole to take care of his ailing mother. He is the son of former DGP Bidya Bhushan Mahanti from Odisha.
In April, the Rajasthan High Court’s decision to sentence Bitihotra to seven years in prison was affirmed by the Supreme Court. Additionally, before June 5, the court ordered him to turn himself in to the jail administration within a two-month period. Within fifteen days following his detention on April 12, 2006, the Fast Track Trial Court Alwar found him mostly guilty. On October 4 of the same year, the Rajasthan High Court affirmed his conviction. Bitihotra was granted bail on March 31, 2017, while his Special Leave Petition (SLP) was still pending before the SC. However, he remained incarcerated because he was ordered to serve the maximum sentence of three months in connection with a parole jumping case.
November 20, 2006, he was granted 15 days of release while serving the seven-year prison sentence that the lower court had imposed due to his mother’s condition. He was ordered to return to prison on December 4, 2006, but he managed to get out and was apprehended once more on March 8, 2013, in Pazhayangadi, Kerala, where he was employed as a probationary officer in a public sector bank by pretending to be from Andhra Pradesh. Bitihotra earned an MBA and was able to join the bank as a probationary officer after breaching bail in 2006. He was then given a three-month prison sentence by the lower court for fleeing during his parole period. After serving his sentence, the court had requested that he serve a three-month imprisonment.
The High Court denied his request in 2017 that the two sentences be served concurrently. Bitti’s dad had promised that his son would be going back to jail in fifteen days. He was put on suspension for allegedly aiding his son evade parole, but on May 13, 2009, the Odisha government restored him to his position. On April 30, 2010, he announced his retirement from his positions as commandant general of home guards and director general of fire services.
