Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has issued a strong warning to the Indian Test team ahead of their crucial tour of England in late June. India will play five Tests against Ben Stokes’ side, marking the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Ganguly stressed the need for key players, particularly Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, to deliver big performances as India aims to secure its first Test series win in England since 2007.
Speaking at the Trailblazers 3.0 event by RevSport, Ganguly highlighted a major concern—apart from Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal, no Indian batter averages over 40 in overseas conditions. He specifically pointed out Pant’s struggles during India’s disappointing tour of Australia earlier this year. The former India skipper emphasized that for India to dominate in Test cricket again, at least four of their top six batters must average over 50.
Ganguly also underlined the importance of putting up big scores to turn India’s fortunes around in England. Recalling India’s past triumphs in Pakistan, Australia, and England, he cited examples of the team’s success when they managed to post massive totals. He pointed out that India’s only victory in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia came in Perth, where Jaiswal’s brilliant 161-run knock helped India surpass 400 runs in the second innings.
“You have to put runs on the board to win Test matches. You don’t win by scoring 200, 250, or 180. The reason they won in Perth was because they got 400 on the board. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who I think is India’s best Test batsman at the moment, played a crucial role,” Ganguly stated.
As India gears up for the England challenge, the focus will be on Pant, Gill, and the rest of the batting lineup to rise to the occasion and deliver match-winning performances.
