The process of electing the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) has begun. The United Nations has nominated 143 member countries for the nomination of the world’s top diplomat and executive. The process began officially after UN General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir and the British Ambassador to the United Nations Barbara Woodward, Chair of the Security Council, signed a joint letter this month.

The term of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will end on December 31. However, Guterres announced last month that he would run for a second term for the next five years. However, Honduras’ ambassador to the United Nations, Mary Elizabeth Flores, has reportedly written to all members of the world. “She has not been a Secretary-General since the day the UN was established,” she said. Member states are therefore asked to recommend female candidates.

The Secretary-General is nominated on the recommendation of the 15-member Security Council of the General Assembly. The United States, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and China, the five permanent members of the council, have veto power. Therefore, their support in the selection of the Secretary-General is important. In it, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has already backed Guterres ’candidacy.

However, he said informal talks with Woodward and Bozky’s candidates could take place in May or June. Which will precede the selection process of the Security Council. Woodward, however, pointed out in her Twitter handle that the Secretary-General of the Security Council, the President of the United Nations, has begun the process of electing the Secretary-General.
