The use of data for policy innovation by the state

In order to encourage the use of evidence-based research for policy input, the state government established a relationship with the University of Chicago Trust (UCT) to use data for innovation and policy choices.
The five-year cooperation will foster initiatives to create a high-quality data interface for allowing evidence-based governance of current programs and promote evidence-based research in the fields of energy and environment, health, education, agriculture, water and sanitation, etc.

The building of the data, policy, and innovation center (DPIC) in Bhubaneswar is a testament to the government’s dedication to the state’s growth across sectors, according to state electronics and information technology minister Tusharkanti Behera. In Odisha, researchers from all over the world are doing research and disseminating their discoveries.

By utilizing recent developments in econometrics, data science, and machine learning, DPIC seeks to enable rigorous, evidence-based governance and serves as a center of excellence for gathering big data from many sources. The trust is assisting the government in operationalizing DPIC through the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute and its other research centers.

Odisha has always been at the forefront of trying novel ideas utilizing data. We collaborated with the Odisha government five years ago to establish an industry-specific initiative for data-driven openness. In a sense, it’s a return home for us, and we are eager to collaborate closely with the government of Odisha to advance data and evidence-driven policymaking, according to University of Chicago professor Michael Greenstone, the Milton Friedman Professor of Economics and Director of the Energy Policy Institute.
The government will receive help from University of Chicago researchers.
