Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia plant scenario “remains hazardous,” according to the UN nuclear chief

The biggest nuclear power station in Europe depends on a steady flow of electricity to run pumps that move water around cooling reactors and pools containing radioactive material. The head of the UN nuclear organisation stated on Wednesday that the situation at the Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukraine “remains hazardous” in the wake of a Russian missile strike that cut the plant off from the grid earlier this month. The biggest nuclear power station in Europe depends on a steady flow of electricity to run pumps that move water around cooling reactors and pools containing radioactive material. Following a Russian attack on March 9, the plant has only had access to one backup power line, which is still “disconnected and being repaired,” according to Rafael Grossi, the president of the International Atomic Energy Agency.Grossi stated in a statement that “nuclear safety at the ZNPP remains in a perilous situation.”

Inability to connect to the grid and the need for maintenance on the plant’s final emergency power connection might result in a total loss of power, forcing it to depend on diesel generators for the seventh time since Russia took control of it a year ago, according to Grossi. “I again call on all parties to pledge their support for the plant’s nuclear safety and security measures.”
According to Ukrainian nuclear energy ag, emergency diesel generators had been turned on to power the plant’s safety systems.Without the electricity generated by these generators, a nuclear disaster, like the one that occurred in Japan’s Fukushima in 2011, could be brought on by the reactor fuel overheating.Following the Russian hit, the plant was cut off from the Ukrainian electricity grid for 11 hours.Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, claimed to have spoken with Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, about the circumstances at the factory. Zelensky told reporters on Tuesday, “We discussed how to establish a more efficient process for the de-occupation of our nuclear plant. “No international organisation is able to fix this issue since the format in which we live, with all due respect and gratitude for what Mr. Grossi is doing to settle this dilemma, does not help the Zaporizhzhia station.”
