In the United States, gun violence became the most important and severely worrisome problem in 2023. Sadly, a sombre milestone has been reached after six months, with the nation having seen the most mass killings in any six-month period since at least 2006. Nobody ever intended or hoped for this result to occur.
The United States went through a difficult time between January 1 and June 30 that was marked by a number of upsetting incidents. There were 28 incidents of mass killings over this span, with firearms being used in almost all of them, according to an investigation by the Associated Press. Tragically, the death toll appeared to rise weekly, feeding a painful cycle of violence and loss.Sadly, the year 2023 has set a new and depressing record by breaking the old mark of 27 mass killings in the second half of 2022.The Small Arms Survey, a Geneva-based organisation, said in 2018 that there were 393.3 million firearms owned by people in the United States. This number exceeds the nation’s actual population, which totals about 340 million people.According to a research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, over 7.5 million Americans—or just under three percent of the population—became first-time gun owners between January 2019 and April 2021.
