The ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ (NSVA) was approved by the Lok Sabha on Monday, September 20 with 454 votes in favour and 2 against. In both the Parliament and the state Assemblies, a 33% reservation for women is proposed under the bill.The opposition parties maintained their demand for a quota inside a quota throughout the Lok Sabha’s discussion of the women’s reservation Bill. Sonia Gandhi, who opened the debate on behalf of the Congress party, stated that the party supported the Bill but stressed that a caste census should be carried out to ensure that women from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBC receive reservation.
Rahul Gandhi added his voice to the discussion by claiming that the bill was “incomplete” and did not include any accommodations for OBC women. After Gandhi, Amit Shah also spoke to the House in support of the Bill, claiming that its approval will usher in a new era.Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, had urged all political parties to endorse the Bill on Wednesday. Shah stressed that the administration has made the safety, respect, and equality of women its guiding values.
Shah noted that the bill has previously been introduced four times in Parliament without success. He declared that the Bill should have the backing of all political parties.
