According to a survey by The Lancet Regional Health, the number of suicide deaths among Indian men has increased by more than one-third over the past seven years. 89,129 men and 42,521 women died by suicide in 2014. In 2021, the ratio increased to 2.64 times. 45,026 females died by suicide this year compared to 1,18,979 males.According to Dr. Suryakant Yadav of IIPS, the author of the study titled “Changing pattern of suicide deaths in India,” the suicide rate for men was twice that of women in 2014 and grew to 2.5 times in 2021.
Men of all ages have died by suicide, but according to the IIPS survey, the majority of female deaths were between the ages of 18 and 29.The paper said with two supporting datapoints that “low suicide among women might indicate better coping mechanisms for dealing with stress.” First, compared to men, who accounted for 24.3% of suicide deaths, married women made up 8.7% of the total. “Secondly, we also found that with education, the rate of suicide among women declined, but not so with men,” stated Dr. Yadav.
