Since 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects have led to an increase in pupils from private schools, which has exacerbated the overcrowding problem in BMC schools.A BMC-run Urdu-medium school in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, reportedly has almost 100 Class 4 and Class 6 pupils who are forced to sit on the floor during class since there aren’t enough tables. The Govandi Citizens Welfare Forum convenor, Shaikh Faiyaz Alam, expressed shock at the state of affairs. “We have a well-established school complex in Shivaji Nagar,” he declared. But we were astonished to see pupils sitting on the floor in their classrooms when we went to the school on Friday to give out face masks to shield the students from the bad air quality in the city.
Since 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects have led to an increase in pupils from private schools, which has exacerbated the overcrowding problem in BMC schools. Education campaigner Nitin Dalavi said, “This fact can be attributed to the rise in numbers.” “The BMC should be commended for admitting economically disadvantaged students whose education was interrupted by unaffordable fees, but they also need to improve infrastructure to adequately accommodate these students.”The difficulties were confirmed by BMC education department sources, who said, “The primary section’s increased intake has cascaded into the secondary section.” Regretfully, not enough benches are available to seat every student.
