The Supreme Court noted that the Gujarati government lacked the authority to determine whether to commute the sentence.The Gujarat government’s decision to prematurely free 11 individuals found guilty of gangraping Bilkis Bano and killing her family members during the 2002 sectarian riots has been overturned by the Supreme Court of India.As it rendered a decision on a number of petitions against the government’s 2022 action, the court stated that the Gujarat government lacked the authority to determine whether to commute the sentence.
