HC Breather For Anubhav Mohanty From Arrest In DV Case

Anubhav Mohanty, the actor-turned-politician, is greatly relieved that the Orissa High Court today stayed the non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him that was issued by a lower court in connection with a domestic abuse case. In the High Court, the BJP leader and MP contested the JMFC-MP/MLA court’s ruling.

“The High court has put a stay on the NBW issued by the lower court against MP and BJP leader Anubhav Mohanty. The court also issued notice to opposite party Varsha Priyadarshini by speed post. The court has posted the matter to July 8 for next hearing. We drew the attention of the court that Anubhav is one of the star campaigners of BJP and he will campaign for the party in the ongoing elections. Secondly, his mother’s health condition is not well and he has taken her to New Delhi for treatment. He had also sought time to appear in the court for the reason. But the lower court issued the NBW without taking the reality into account,” Anubhav’s lawyer Pitambar Acharya said.

On May 13, the JMFC MP/MLA court issued an NBW against Anubhav Mohanty. The NBW was issued in relation to a four-year-old domestic abuse allegation that his now-divorced wife Varsha Priyadarshini had filed against him. When Mohanty failed to show up for the second time, the court issued the warrant and ordered the police to carry out the NBW by May 23. Mohanty and his wife Varsha Priyadarshini were granted a divorce by the Orissa High Court in December of last year.
