Mr. Pabitra Rautray: The Edupreneur Transforming Odisha’s Future

FEATURE: True leaders don’t just build businesses—they shape communities, transform industries, and leave a lasting impact on society. Pabitra Rautray embodies this philosophy, having dedicated his life to revolutionizing real estate, education, hospitality, and infrastructure in Odisha. From his humble beginnings in Nayapalli to establishing the Krishna Group of Companies, Rautray’s journey reflects a rare blend of perseverance and strategic foresight, which have collectively fueled his drive to transform Odisha’s economic and social landscape.

For Rautray, entrepreneurship extends beyond commerce; it serves as a platform for empowerment and meaningful change. Whether providing thousands of families with affordable housing, setting new standards in education through Shri Krishna International School, or elevating Odisha’s hospitality sector, his mission remains rooted in service and accessibility. His firm belief in the role of private enterprise in a state’s growth has driven his active participation in shaping policies and advocating for infrastructure development. Through his visionary leadership, Rautray continues to propel Odisha toward becoming a globally recognized hub for tourism, real estate, and education.

Born in 1968 in Nayapalli village, Rautray’s academic journey took him through Maharshi College and BJB College, where he graduated before embarking on his entrepreneurial path in 1991. Unlike many who enter business solely for profit, his motivation was always clear—to create opportunities, uplift communities, and contribute to Odisha’s growth. His first venture, Krishna, started in the micro carbon and rods industry in Mancheswar, Bhubaneswar, in 1991. It was more than just a business; it was the foundation of a vision that would later expand into real estate, hospitality, education, and infrastructure.

Among his numerous ventures, Shri Krishna International School remains his most cherished project. Established with the goal of providing holistic education, the school focuses not just on academic excellence but on 360-degree development. “Our aim is to create individuals who are not just educated but skilled, ethical, and ready to lead,” Rautray asserts. He firmly believes that education should be a blend of moral values, ethics, and skill-building to prepare students for real-world challenges. Unlike conventional schools, Shri Krishna International School integrates life skills training into its curriculum. Students are taught essential habits such as personal hygiene, discipline, and responsibility from an early age. The institution also emphasizes extracurricular activities like swimming, music, and sports, ensuring a well-rounded development approach. Looking ahead, Rautray envisions transforming the school into a literature university that fosters intellectual curiosity, leadership, and social responsibility. “We don’t just prepare students for exams; we prepare them for life,” he emphasizes.

Rautray’s foray into real estate began in 1993, driven by a singular mission—to provide affordable and sustainable housing for middle-class and lower-middle-class families. Over the years, he has completed more than 37 projects, offering homes to over 8,000 satisfied customers. His early project, Krishna Puri, exemplified his vision. In 2003-04, he provided 500 homes at an astonishingly low price. “My focus has always been service over profit. People need homes, and I wanted to ensure they could afford them,” he explains. Krishna Group has since developed landmark projects such as Krishna Garden, Krishna Enclave, Krishna Plaza, Krishna Residency, and Krishna Mansion in Bhubaneswar, along with Krishna Dham, Krishna Homes, and Krishna Sea Sight in Puri. His upcoming venture in Jharpada will add 500 more homes to his growing portfolio. Beyond hospitality, he has contributed to large-scale infrastructure projects, including a new 3,000-flat housing development in Puri.

His latest initiative, Krishna Builtmart, is a game-changer in the real estate sector. This new venture ensures that Krishna Built Mart not only supplies the necessary raw materials to support builders and developers from start to finish but also provides high-quality interiors and post-construction services. This comprehensive approach guarantees a seamless and efficient building process for homeowners. He has also been active in exports, having supplied building materials to China, Europe, and South Asian countries around 2014. His plans to revive this sector reflect his ambition to expand Odisha’s industrial footprint globally.

Understanding the potential of Odisha’s tourism sector, Rautray has made strategic moves into the hospitality industry. Currently, he is developing four-star hotels in Puri, with plans to expand to Chilika and other key locations under the brand Club Krishna Sea Site Pvt. Ltd. “Odisha has immense tourism potential. With the right infrastructure, we can make it a globally recognized destination,” he states. As Chairman of the Urban and Housing Society of Utkal Chamber of Commerce, Rautray firmly believes that Bhubaneswar has the potential to become a world-class city. “If Dubai can grow at such a pace, why can’t Odisha? We have the resources, manpower, and potential to make it happen,” he asserts.

He advocates for greater collaboration between private enterprises and the government to drive economic growth, particularly in housing, infrastructure, and tourism. His membership in the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) further strengthens his influence in shaping the state’s development policies. One of Rautray’s proudest achievements is the employment opportunities his ventures have created. With over 800 direct employees and around 2,000 indirect workers, Krishna Group has become a significant contributor to Odisha’s economy. “A successful business is not just about profits; it’s about creating livelihoods and improving lives,” he says.

For Pabitra Rautray, success is not measured in financial gain but in impact. “Business is not a money-making machine; it is a service to mankind,” he firmly believes. He envisions his legacy not just in buildings and businesses but in the lives he has touched. “I don’t want to create just a generation of employees; I want to create successors who carry forward my vision of service and entrepreneurship,” he says.

His message to the younger generation is clear: “Embrace entrepreneurship, for it fosters continuous learning and growth. Running your own business challenges your mind, encourages innovation, and propels you forward. Unlike employment, where progress can be limited, entrepreneurship allows you to take risks, overcome challenges, and create something truly meaningful.” With new projects on the horizon, including hotel expansions, large-scale real estate developments, and educational initiatives, Pabitra Rautray continues to push boundaries. His dream of making Odisha a global tourist hub and Bhubaneswar a model city remains steadfast. But at the heart of it all, his mission remains unchanged—to serve. “My goal is simple: to do something for the world, to help as many people as I can, and to leave behind a legacy of positive change.”
