Rooftop Solar Projects With Combined Capacity Of 17,705 KW Installed On 1,232 Public Buildings

In the State Assembly on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo said that the Odisha government has successfully erected rooftop solar projects on 1,232 public buildings around the state, totaling 17,705 KW in capacity. Over the previous five years, the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) has installed rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 8,317.69 KW on 825 government offices and 5,387 KW on 342 educational institutions, according to Singh Deo, who also oversees the Energy portfolio. Furthermore, 65 government buildings, educational institutions, and medical facilities in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar have solar plants installed by the Green Energy Development Corporation of Odisha Ltd (GEDCOL) with a combined capacity of 4,000.55 KW.

According to Singh Deo’s separate announcement, 2,740 people in Odisha have benefitted from the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), with recipients receiving Rs 13.75 crore in federal government support. For the next three fiscal years (2024–2025 to 2026–2027), the state government has budgeted Rs 1,800 crore to implement the project. With the exception of major hydropower projects, Odisha’s total installed renewable energy capacity, contracted by GRIDCO, was 595 MW as of the most recent fiscal year. By 2030, 10,960 MW—roughly 57% of the state’s overall energy mix—will be produced by renewable energy sources, according to the Energy Department’s ambitious goal.

Singh Deo emphasized that the state government’s Odisha Renewable Energy Policy, 2022 (OREP, 2022) provides a number of incentives to entice people, companies, and sectors to embrace renewable energy. This program is in line with India’s pledge under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to produce 50% of its power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and cut GDP emissions intensity by 45% by that year (compared to 2005 levels). Odisha’s dedication to sustainable growth and environmental preservation is further demonstrated by the state’s renewable energy ambitions, which align with both national and international climate goals.
