Turning Lessons into Livelihoods: Mr. K. Kiran Kumar

Proprietor, MMG (Maa Majhigouri Furnitures) uPVC Windows & Doors

FEATURE: In the quiet town of Rayagada, a quiet revolution began during one of the most uncertain periods in recent history. As the world grappled with lockdowns and economic disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. K. Kiran Kumar—a professor by profession and an entrepreneur by conviction—planted the seeds of a business that would change not just his life, but also the lives of many around him. Today, as the Proprietor of MMG (Maa Majhigouri Furnitures ) uPVC Windows & Doors, he leads a thriving enterprise that blends quality manufacturing with a powerful sense of community upliftment.

Mr. Kiran Kumar’s roots trace back to a modest, middle-class household. His early understanding of trade came from observing his father and uncle, who were small-time traders in local village markets. At the tender age of eight, he began accompanying his father to weekly market gatherings, absorbing the essence of commerce, negotiation, and relationship-building. These moments, though simple, planted the seeds of entrepreneurship in him.

Life took him away from home early. From Class 8 onward, he lived with his uncle, whose support played a pivotal role in his academic and personal development. The values instilled during these formative years laid the foundation for the discipline and empathy he carries today.

After completing his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering in 2010 and earning an MBA, Mr. Kumar began his teaching career at Gandhi Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in 2011. His decade-long stint in academia gave him not just subject expertise but a deeper understanding of people and purpose. He credits much of his early professional grooming to the guidance of Mr. G. P. Rath, Director of GIST College, who served as a mentor and role model. “Mr. Rath taught me more than academics—he taught me leadership, humility, and how to nurture growth in others,” Mr. Kumar recalls.

For over a decade, he devoted himself to the field of education, using the classroom as a platform to sharpen his decision-making, leadership, and people management skills. “Academia gave me the tools, but I always felt there was more I could do with them,” he reflects.

Starting a manufacturing business in a semi-urban town during a global crisis was no small feat. But support came at the right time. Mr. Kumar acknowledges the pivotal role played by DIC IPO Mr. Sabyasachi Sahoo, who guided him through the complexities of securing loans and setting up the initial operations. “That initial support gave me the confidence to take the plunge,” he says.

From humble beginnings, MMG has grown into a trusted brand in Rayagada and neighboring districts. The company operates two modern, automated units producing premium uPVC sliding windows and doors. A key partnership with Veka, a reputed German brand, ensures quality materials that distinguish MMG’s products in a market often flooded with cheaper, low-grade alternatives.

“Educating customers about long-term quality and value is one of our toughest challenges,” he says. “Many go for cheaper options initially, but we focus on durability and service to build long-lasting trust.”

That commitment has borne fruit. What started with zero employees now supports nearly 100 livelihoods. Not a single team member has left since the company’s founding—a rare feat in today’s fast-paced business world. “This loyalty means more to me than any number,” Mr. Kumar says proudly. “We’ve built this together, and that bond is unbreakable.”

At the heart of this inspiring journey lies Rayagada—a place Mr. Kiran Kumar holds close to his soul. “Rayagada has given me everything,” he reflects. “My roots, my education, my career—and even my life partner, Mrs. Nilima.” His wife has been a steadfast source of strength, standing beside him through every challenge and milestone in his entrepreneurial path. With deep emotion, he also offers his heartfelt gratitude to Goddess Maa Majhi Gauri, the divine force behind his venture. “It is by her blessings that I’ve come this far,” he says with reverence. “She has guided every step of my journey and shaped the person I am today.”

Looking ahead, Mr. Kumar envisions scaling MMG while staying true to the company’s core values. His goal is to expand the team to 200, then 400, ensuring that every new hire becomes part of the same family culture that defines MMG today.

As someone who bridges the worlds of academia and enterprise, Mr. Kiran Kumar believes in continuous learning. “Academia and business are like my two eyes,” he says. “One keeps me grounded in knowledge, and the other lets me create real-world impact. At heart, I’m still a student—applying what I’ve learned to build something meaningful.”

In a world where entrepreneurship often leans toward profit over purpose, Mr. K. Kiran Kumar’s journey is a refreshing reminder that success is most fulfilling when it uplifts others. His story is not just about windows and doors—it’s about opening possibilities and building futures, one livelihood at a time.
