The continuing Mahanadi water conflict between Odisha and Chhattisgarh has to be resolved amicably, according to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Majhi emphasized that although the Central Water Commission is making attempts, progress is being achieved slowly during a high-level meeting held at Lok Seva Bhavan. The chief minister proposed that the two states might work out a solution through negotiations with the backing of the federal government. To help find a solution, the Central Water Commission can offer technical assistance.
This comes following talks between Majhi and Bishnu Deo Sai, the chief minister of Chhattisgarh, at World Water Day in Bhubaneswar in March and the All India State Water Resources Ministers’ Conference in February. The resolution of the conflict has been emphasized by both chief ministers.
Discussions to find a solution are already underway between high-ranking officials from both states. Senior authorities from the Water Resources Department, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and Advocate General Pitambar Acharya were among the important officials present at the meeting.
