PM Modi states : INDIA is ready to respond

Amid growing tensions over Donald Trump’s sharp tariff hike on Indian exports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday strongly asserted that India would never compromise on the interests of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy workers—even if it leads to economic repercussions.

Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in Delhi, PM Modi said, “For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it.”

Trump recently signed an executive order raising tariffs on Indian goods—including agricultural products—to 50%, citing national security and India’s oil imports from Russia as concerns. The first phase of the new tariff took effect on August 7, with the additional levy set to follow after 21 days.

Despite U.S. pressure during trade talks to open India’s agricultural market for corn, soybeans, and cotton, India has resisted due to fears of jeopardizing local farmers’ livelihoods.

At the same event, PM Modi also honoured agricultural pioneer MS Swaminathan by releasing a commemorative coin and stamp. Known as the “father of the Green Revolution” in India, Swaminathan revolutionized Indian agriculture in the 1960s by introducing high-yielding wheat varieties, significantly boosting food production and reducing rural poverty.
