In a significant step towards strengthening India’s mining sector and workforce capabilities, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NIT-R) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) to boost capacity building, technical upskilling and managerial development of OMC’s workforce. The agreement was signed on February 12, 2026, during a formal ceremony marking an emerging partnership between academia and industry.
Under the MoU, the two organisations will work closely on structured training programs, joint research initiatives, and innovation projects aimed at modernising mining operations and equipping professionals with the latest skills required in today’s evolving industry landscape. The pact also includes collaboration on digitisation efforts, operational optimisation, and leadership development programs for OMC employees.

To coincide with this collaboration, NIT-R launched a three-day Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programme focusing on Mineral Resource Management – Technical, Regulatory and Strategic Insights. Organised jointly by NIT-R’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and the Mining Engineering department, the programme integrates technical knowledge with regulatory and strategic perspectives, helping participants better understand modern mining challenges.
Speaking on the occasion, NIT-R’s Dean of Alumni, Industry & International Relations, Himanshu Bhushan Sahu, emphasised that the partnership would strengthen OMC’s technical expertise and managerial capabilities — particularly in areas like AI-based mining solutions, mine automation, digital tooling, and sustainable mining practices.
OMC’s Director (HR) Alok Kumar Pal noted that the corporation is actively transitioning from traditional mining practices to more mechanised and technology-driven operations. By collaborating with a leading technical institution like NIT-R, OMC aims to create a future-ready workforce able to embrace innovation and contribute to Odisha’s industrial and economic growth.
The MoU is expected to pave the way for long-term cooperation in workforce development, research, and technology adoption — a move that aligns with broader efforts to modernise India’s mining sector and promote sustainable, efficient mining operations.
