The Government of India has stepped up its fight against cybercrime, blocking 3,718 mobile applications, including fraudulent loan apps, as part of a nationwide effort to protect citizens from digital fraud. The latest figures were shared by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the Lok Sabha.
₹11,158 Crore in Cyber-Fraud Losses Prevented
According to the government, more than ₹11,158 crore has been saved from potential cyber-fraud losses through the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS). The system has handled more than 32.80 lakh complaints up to June 30, 2026.
The CFCFRMS, operated by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), is designed to help authorities respond quickly when victims report financial fraud and attempt to stop fraudulent transactions before the money is moved further.
SIM Cards and Devices Also Blocked
The crackdown has extended beyond mobile applications. Government data shows that more than 15.75 lakh SIM cards and 5.77 lakh IMEI numbers reported by police authorities have also been blocked.
Authorities have also established mechanisms to identify suspicious financial accounts. More than 30.48 lakh suspect identifiers have been added to a central suspect registry, while 32.08 lakh mule accounts have been identified. These measures helped financial institutions decline fraudulent transactions worth around ₹25,698 crore up to June 30, 2026.
Why This Matters
Fraudulent apps, particularly fake loan applications, can trick users by promising quick loans or easy earnings. Some malicious apps may seek excessive access to personal information, contacts, messages or other sensitive data.
The government has therefore been working with law-enforcement agencies, financial institutions, telecom authorities and technology platforms to identify and block suspicious digital infrastructure.
The MHA’s latest disclosure shows that India’s cybercrime response is increasingly moving beyond simply investigating fraud after it happens — authorities are also trying to block the apps, phone numbers, devices and financial accounts used by cybercriminal networks.
