A major leadership change has taken place at Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL), with Managing Director and CEO Sudhir Sitapati resigning from his position. The company has appointed Aasif Malbari, its former Global Chief Financial Officer, as the new Managing Director and CEO with immediate effect.

Sudden Leadership Change

Sitapati’s resignation came unexpectedly, just months after he had been reappointed for another five-year term. His departure has therefore attracted considerable attention from investors and the business community.

Sitapati joined GCPL as CEO in 2021 and was credited with helping streamline the company’s product portfolio, strengthen its manufacturing operations and improve volume growth across several markets.

The company has not announced any change to its overall business strategy following his departure.

Aasif Malbari Becomes New CEO

GCPL has appointed Aasif Malbari to lead the company. Malbari had been serving as Global CFO since 2023 and has also held responsibilities connected with Godrej’s international operations.

He brings more than three decades of experience across the consumer-goods and automotive sectors, including previous roles at Hindustan Unilever and Tata Motors.

The company said Malbari’s appointment is intended to provide continuity while GCPL works on its next phase of growth.

Investors React to the News

The sudden leadership transition immediately affected the company’s stock. Godrej Consumer Products shares fell nearly 10% on August 12, reaching a three-year low, reflecting investor concerns about the unexpected change at the top.

Analysts have described the resignation as surprising because the board had recently been discussing an extension of Sitapati’s tenure. At the same time, some analysts have expressed confidence that the company’s broader strategy can continue under the new leadership.

What Comes Next for GCPL?

The leadership change comes as the FMCG company deals with challenges including uneven consumer demand and pressure on margins from rising input costs.

GCPL has also been focusing on strengthening its online sales, digital marketing and execution, areas that are becoming increasingly important as India’s consumer market changes.

The company is expected to maintain strategic continuity under Malbari while evaluating its future leadership structure. Reuters reported that GCPL is also considering a structure with separate CEOs for its India and international operations.
