There will be no orbitor on the Chandrayaan-3: ISRO chief

K Sivan, head of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), said the launch of the Chandrayaan-3 is likely to take place in 2022, which was previously scheduled to be launched by the end of 2020. Many ISRO projects, including the Chandrayaan-3 and the country’s first manned spacecraft, Gaganyan, have been severely affected by the Covid-19 lockdown.

The Chandrayaan-3 will not have the same orbit as the previous one. “Work is underway on the mission,” Sivan said. It is similar to Chandrayaan-2, but will not have an orbiter. Chandrayaan-3 is expected to launch in 2022.

Chandrayaan-2 was launched on July 22, 2019. It was launched for the landing of the rover on the Moon’s South Pole. However, Chandrayaan-2’s lander ‘Vikram’ failed to land on September 7, 2019. India’s dream of succeeding in the first attempt was unfulfilled.

Chandrayaan-3 is also an important mission for ISRO, which will pave the way for India’s space exploration. “ISRO plans to complete its first unmanned mission in December this year on the basis of the spacecraft project,” Siban said. The mission was to be launched in December last year.
