Uk Court Rules Nirav Modi Can Be Extradited To India

UK court finally allowed diamond merchant Nirav Modi’s extradition to India as it found him guilty of fraud and money laundering in the Punjab National Bank.

Nirav is wanted for fraud and money-laundering for an amount of around 14,000 crores in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case. The Westminster Magistrates’ Court rejected Nirav’s mental health concerns and stated that they are not unusual in a man in his circumstances.

The court also stated that Modi had conspired to destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses. And Barrack 12 at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai is fit for Nirav Modi. Modi will be given sufficient medical treatment and mental health care at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. There is no danger of suicide for Nirav Modi if he is sent to India as he will be given adequate medical care at Arthur Road jail.

For nearly two years the legal battle was going on regarding money laundering and fraud. On 19th March 2019, Nirav was arrested on an extradition warrant and had multiple attempts seeking bail in past.

While in India there are two ongoing criminal proceedings against him which one is by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that relates to the large-scale PNB scam through fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoUs) or loan agreements, while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case is about the laundering of proceeds of that fraud.

Along with that, he is also facing two additional charges of causing the disappearance of evidence and intimidating witnesses or criminal intimidation to cause death which was annexed to the CBI case.
