Odia girl Banita Dash from Nabarangpur district and studies at Navodaya Vidyalaya in Madhya Pradesh’s Amarkantak in Anuppur district is the first Odia school student to have discovered an asteroid.
According to the reports, she joined the Khagolshala Asteroid Search Campaign (KASC) in January 2021 where they train students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas to detect asteroids. She discovered the asteroid using a telescope located in Hawaii.
The report further added that that particular asteroid has been recognised by NASA, Hardin-Simmons University and International Astronomical Search Collaboration.
