Blended dosages providing better outputs against the Alpha, Beta & Delta variants

Mixing and matching of two Coronavirus vaccines Covishield and Covaxin came out with better outputs, a study of ICMR Indian Council of Medical Research claims.

The study was conducted on the people of Uttar Pradesh who mistakenly took the two different jabs, they suggested that the mixing of vaccines is safe and provides better immunity against corona variants. The research finds that immunization with a combination of an adenovirus vector platform-based vaccine followed by an inactivated whole virus vaccine was not only safe but also elicited better immunogenicity.

Though India so far has followed the mixture of two doses one Covaxin and another Covishield, eighteen plus people accidentally received Covishield as the first dose and Covaxin as the second one. The research also compared the safety and immunogenicity of those individuals who received two different vaccine doses against those people who received Covishield pr Covaxin.

The immune system is much stronger in a heterogeneous group against the Alpha, Beta, Delta variants, or Coronavirus.”These discoveries have an imperative implication for the COVID-19 immunization program wherein heterozygous inoculation will clear the way for acceptance of improved and way better protection against the variant strains of SARS-CoV-2.

Such blended regimens will too offer assistance to overcome the challenges of the setback of specific vaccines and evacuate hesitancy around vaccines in people’s intellect,” the research said.

However, one should not try till there is a formal government mandate on blending and matching two COVID-19 vaccines. Last month, an expert panel of India’s drug regulator, DCGI, prescribed conducting a study on blending dosages of Covishield and Covaxin vaccines.

The suggestion came after the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore looked for permission to conduct such a study. The Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Association (CDSCO) said that reason for this study is to survey whether an individual can be given two distinctive vaccine shots — one each of Covishield and Covaxin — to complete the vaccination course.

“The SEC (subject expert committee) after nitty-gritty consultations prescribed granting consent to CMC, Vellore for conducting the phase-4 clinical trial covering 300 healthy volunteers for blending of COVID-19 vaccines Covaxin and Covishield,” a source said, PTI reported.
