In the next four to five years, India is expected to build up to 80 airports, according to the aviation regulator, who also noted that aerodromes must first meet certain conditions before they can begin operating flights. The number of airports in the nation has expanded from 74 to 141 during the past eight years and will reach 220 in the following four to five years.
According to the official reports, the Civil Aviation Ministry has given ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up of 21 greenfield airports across the country, including Mopa in Goa; Navi Mumbai, Shirdi and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra; Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Hassan and Shivamogga in Karnataka; Dabra in Madhya Pradesh; Kushinagar and Noida (Jewar) in Uttar Pradesh; Dholera and Hirasar (Rajkot) in Gujarat; Karaikal in Puducherry; Dagadarthi (Nellore), Bhogapuram and Orvakal (Kurnool) in Andhra Pradesh; Durgapur in West Bengal; Pakyong in Sikkim; Kannur in Kerala; and Hollongi (Itanagar) in Arunachal Pradesh.
Eight greenfield airports have been operationalized thus far: Durgapur, Shirdi, Sindhudurg, Pakyong, Kannur, Kalaburagi, Orvakal, and Kushinagar.
According to the Aviation Ministry, the Center has given site approval to the Himachal Pradesh government for the construction of a new greenfield airport in Nagchala, Mandi, in the fiscal year 2022–2023. Also planned for construction under RCS-UDAN during FY 2022–23 are 35 airports, helipads, and water aerodromes. According to the DGCA CAR, an aerodrome must comply with certain requirements in order to be safe. These requirements relate to management systems, operational procedures, physical characteristics, assessment and treatment of obstacles, visual aids, rescue and fire-fighting services, and physical characteristics (Civil Aviation Requirement).
While the licence for operating airports is provided by the Central government in accordance with the Civil Aviation policy, these rules are for the technical licencing of the aerodrome.
