Strange and unconventional inventions are commonplace, but a shoe that accelerates one’s gait? The Moonwalkers, created by US company Shift Robotics, are the focus of a current Kickstarter campaign. They purportedly have quick-release magnetic buckles and adjustable straps that can be used to attach them to a variety of shoes.
The Moonwalkers are said to be just as simple to use as the moving sidewalks that take you down a long airport terminal, as contrast to skating down the sidewalk on roller skates, which has a little bit of a learning curve. You simply fasten them on your feet and stroll while experiencing a significant speed improvement.
“Skates are not moonwalkers. They’re footwear. Actually, the world’s quickest shoes,” Shift Robotics founder and CEO Xunjie Zang said on the website of the business.
In these, you don’t skate. You move forward by walking. According to News Atlas, a 1.5-hour charge is reported to be sufficient to get you over a distance of roughly 9.7 km, depending on walking speed and terrain. You don’t have to learn how to use them; the shoes learn from you.
The shoe’s eight rollerblade wheels, which were created specifically with staircases in mind, are propelled by a 300-watt electric motor. The user can switch between Lock and Shift modes with a foot motion. The rollerskate-like wheels are locked into position while the Lock mode is engaged, but they can spin freely when the Shift mode is used.
If all goes as planned, a pair of Moonwalkers will cost you US$899; the planned retail price is $1,399. The shoes are said to weigh around 4.2 pounds each and have a range of between 5 and 7 miles. On a dry road, the brake distance is said to be about 2 feet.According to the Kickstarter, the creator of the company got the idea for the shoes after almost being hit by a car while riding a scooter to work.
